ABOUT THE EVENT
On October 16, CARE Healing Center will host our 2°d Annual Lighting the Way for Survivor’s Vigil. This community-wide gathering honors survivors of sexual violence and human trafficking, raises awareness, and fosters solidarity in Carroll County.
THE DRESS FORM EXHIBIT
This year’s vigil will feature a deeply moving Dress Form Exhibit-an impactful visual installation that powerfully challenges victim-blaming myths and reinforces the truth: Sexual violence is never caused by what someone was wearing. It is caused solely by the perpetrator.
Inspired by the internationally recognized Installation’s Doesn’t Matter What I Was Wearing, this year’s exhibit will feature six dress forms, each representing a survivor’s story, displayed anonymously alongside a brief account of their experience:
- A young waitress assaulted by the bartender where she worked.
- A college freshman who was assaulted by a person she was casually dating.
- An 11-year-old victim of human trafficking.
- A young woman sexually harassed during a drinking game at a house party.
- A man hanging out with friends.
- A nine-year-old who was assaulted during a sleepover.
SURVIVOR LUMINARIES
On the night of the vigil, 226 luminaries will be lit representing every client that received services from CARE between July 1, 2024 and June 30, 2025. Each light sends a message of hope that no survivor should have to suffer in the dark, that they have the right to be seen, to be believed and to have a community stand behind them.
